Τί γὰρ εἰ ἠπίστησάν τινες; Μὴ ἡ ἀπιστία αὐτῶν τὴν πίστιν τοῦ θεοῦ καταργήσει; Μὴ γένοιτο· γινέσθω δὲ ὁ θεὸς ἀληθής\, πᾶς δὲ ἄνθρωπος ψεύστης\, καθὼς γέγραπται\, Ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου\, καὶ νικήσῃς ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαί σε. Εἰ δὲ ἡ ἀδικία ἡμῶν θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην συνίστησιν\, τί ἐροῦμεν; Μὴ ἄδικος ὁ θεὸς ὁ ἐπιφέρων τὴν ὀργήν; – κατὰ ἄνθρωπον λέγω – Μὴ γένοιτο· ἐπεὶ πῶς κρινεῖ ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον; Εἰ γὰρ ἡ ἀλήθεια τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ ψεύσματι ἐπερίσσευσεν εἰς τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ\, τί ἔτι κἀγὼ ὡς ἁμαρτωλὸς κρίνομαι; Καὶ μή – καθὼς βλασφημούμεθα\, καὶ καθώς φασίν τινες ἡμᾶς λέγειν – ὅτι Ποιήσωμεν τὰ κακὰ ἵνα ἔλθῃ τὰ ἀγαθά; Ὧν τὸ κρίμα ἔνδικόν ἐστιν. He is a Jew who is one inwardly\, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart\, spiritual and not literal. His praise is not from men but from God. Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with\, the Jews are entrusted with the oracles of God. What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Let God be true though every man be false\, as it is written\, “That thou mayest be justified in thy words\, and prevail when thou art judged.” But if our wickedness serves to show the justice of God\, what shall we say? That God is unjust to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could God judge the world? But if through my falsehood God’s truthfulness abounds to his glory\, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not do evil that good may come? – as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just. What then? Are we Jews any better off? No\, not at all; for we have already charged that all men\, both Jews and Greeks\, are under the power of sin\, as it is written:\n“None is righteous\, no\, not one; no one understands\, no one seeks for God. But if you call yourself a Jew and rely upon the law and boast of your relation to God and know his will and approve what is excellent\, because you are instructed in the law\, and if you are sure that you are a guide to the blind\, a light to those who are in darkness\, a corrector of the foolish\, a teacher of children\, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth – you then who teach others\, will you not teach yourself? Full of envy\, murder\, strife\, deceit\, malignity\, they are gossips\, slanderers\, haters of God\, insolent\, haughty\, boastful\, inventors of evil\, disobedient to parents\, foolish\, faithless\, heartless\, ruthless. Though they know God’s decree that those who do such things deserve to die\, they not only do them but approve those who practice them. Therefore you have no excuse\, O man\, whoever you are\, when you judge another; for in passing judgment upon him you condemn yourself\, because you\, the judge\, are doing the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who do such things. Do you suppose\, O man\, that when you judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself\, you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume upon the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not know that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But by your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. For he will render to every man according to his works; to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality\, he will give eternal life; but for those who are factious and do not obey the truth\, but obey wickedness\, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil\, the Jew first and also the Greek.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 5:27-32\nThe Lord said\, “You have heard that it was said\, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. And if your right hand causes you to sin\, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into Gehenna. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again\, even so\, through Jesus\, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.  For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord\, that we who are alive\, who are left until the coming of the Lord\, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep.  For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command\, with the archangel’s call\, and with the sound of the trumpet of God.  And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive\, who are left\, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord.\nGospel Reading: John 21:14-25\nAt that time\, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, when you were young\, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old\, you will stretch out your hands\, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go.” (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him\, “Follow me.” Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved\, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said\, “Lord\, who is it that is going to betray you?” When Peter saw him\, he said to Jesus\, “Lord\, what about this man?” Jesus said to him\, “If it is my will that he remain until I come\, what is that to you? Follow me!” The saying spread abroad among the brethren that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die\, but\, “If it is my will that he remain until I come\, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things\, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written\, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
