Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness\, but instead expose them. For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret; but when anything is exposed by the light it becomes visible\, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it is said\, “Awake\, O sleeper\, and arise from the dead\, and Christ shall give you light.” Look carefully then how you walk\, not as unwise men but as wise\, making the most of the time\, because the days are evil. And he said to Simon Peter\, “Simon\, son of John\, do you love me more than these?” He said to him\, “Yes\, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him\, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him\, “Simon\, son of John\, do you love me?” He said to him\, “Yes\, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him\, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time\, “Simon\, son of John\, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time\, “Do you love me?” And he said to him\, “Lord\, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him\, “Feed my sheep. Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, when you were young\, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old\, you will stretch out your hands\, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go.” (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him\, “Follow me.” Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved\, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said\, “Lord\, who is it that is going to betray you?” When Peter saw him\, he said to Jesus\, “Lord\, what about this man?” Jesus said to him\, “If it is my will that he remain until I come\, what is that to you? Follow me!” The saying spread abroad among the brethren that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die\, but\, “If it is my will that he remain until I come\, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things\, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written\, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

And embarking in a ship of Adramyttium\, which was about to sail to the ports along the coast of Asia\, we put to sea\, accompanied by Aristarchos\, a Macedonian from Thessalonica. The next day we put in at Sidon; and Julius treated Paul kindly\, and gave him leave to go to his friends and be cared for. And putting to sea from there we sailed under the lee of Cyprus\, because the winds were against us. And when we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia\, we came to Myra in Lycia. There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy\, and put us on board. We sailed slowly for a number of days\, and arrived with difficulty off Cnidos\, and as the wind did not allow us to go on\, we sailed under the lee of Crete off Salmone. Coasting along it with difficulty\, we came to a place called Fair Havens\, near which was the city of Lasea.\nAs much time had been lost\, and the voyage was already dangerous because the fast had already gone by\, Paul advised them\, saying\, “Sirs\, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss\, not only of the cargo and the ship\, but also of our lives.” But the centurion paid more attention to the captain and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said. And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in\, the majority advised to put to sea from there\, on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix\, a harbor of Crete\, looking northeast and southeast\, and winter there.\nAnd when the south wind blew gently\, supposing that they had obtained their purpose\, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete\, close inshore. But soon a tempestuous wind\, called the northeaster\, struck down from the land; and when the ship was caught and could not face the wind\, we gave way to it and were driven. And running under the lee of a small island called Cauda\, we managed with difficulty to secure the boat; after hoisting it up\, they took measures to undergird the ship; then\, fearing that they should run on the Syrtis\, they lowered the gear\, and so were driven. As we were violently storm-tossed\, they began next day to throw cargo overboard; and the third day they cast with their own hands the tackle of the ship. And when neither sun nor stars appeared for many a day\, and no small tempest lay on us\, all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned.\nAs they had been long without food\, Paul then came forward among them and said\, “Men\, you should have listened to me\, and should not have set sail from Crete and incurred this injury and loss. I now bid you take heart; for there will be no loss of life among you\, but only of the ship. But we shall have to run on some island.”\nWhen the fourteenth night had come\, as we were drifting across the sea of Adria\, about midnight the sailors suspected that they were nearing land. So they sounded and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on they sounded again and found fifteen fathoms. And fearing that we might run on the rocks\, they let out four anchors from the stern\, and prayed for the day to come. And as the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship\, and had lowered the boat into the sea\, under pretense of laying out anchors from the bow\, Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers\, ‘Unless these men stay in the ship\, you cannot be saved.” Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat\, and let it go.\nAs day was about to dawn\, Paul urged them all to take some food\, saying\, “Today is the fourteenth day that you have continued in suspense and without food\, having taken nothing. Therefore I urge you to take some food; it will give you strength\, since not a hair is to perish from the head of any of you.” And when he had said this\, he took bread\, and giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat. Then they all were encouraged and ate some food themselves. (We were in all two hundred and seventy-six persons in the ship.) And when they had eaten enough\, they lightened the ship\, throwing out the wheat into the sea.\nNow when it was day\, they did not recognize the land\, but they noticed a bay with a beach\, on which they planned if possible to bring the ship ashore. So they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea\, at the same time loosening the ropes that tied the rudders; then hoisting the foresail to the wind they made for the beach. But striking a shoal they ran the vessel aground; the bow stuck and remained immovable\, and the stern was broken up by the surf. The soldiers’ plan was to kill the prisoners\, lest any should swim away and escape; but the centurion\, wishing to save Paul\, kept them from carrying out their purpose. He ordered those who could swim to throw themselves overboard first and make for the land\, and the rest on planks or on pieces of the ship. And so it was that all escaped to land.\nAfter we had escaped\, we then learned that the island was called Malta.\nGospel Reading: John 17:18-26\nAt that time\, Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said\, “As you\, Father\, did send me into the world\, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself\, that they also may be consecrated in truth.\n“I do not pray for these only\, but also for those who believe in me through their word\, that they may all be one; even as you\, Father\, are in me\, and I in you\, that they also may be in us\, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. Νησίον δέ τι ὑποδραμόντες καλούμενον Κλαύδην μόλις ἰσχύσαμεν περικρατεῖς γενέσθαι τῆς σκάφης· ἣν ἄραντες\, βοηθείαις ἐχρῶντο\, ὑποζωννύντες τὸ πλοῖον· φοβούμενοί τε μὴ εἰς τὴν Σύρτην ἐκπέσωσιν\, χαλάσαντες τὸ σκεῦος\, οὕτως ἐφέροντο. Σφοδρῶς δὲ χειμαζομένων ἡμῶν\, τῇ ἑξῆς ἐκβολὴν ἐποιοῦντο· καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ αὐτόχειρες τὴν σκευὴν τοῦ πλοίου ἐρρίψαμεν.  20 Μήτε δὲ ἡλίου μήτε ἄστρων ἐπιφαινόντων ἐπὶ πλείονας ἡμέρας\, χειμῶνός τε οὐκ ὀλίγου ἐπικειμένου\, λοιπὸν περιῃρεῖτο πᾶσα ἐλπὶς τοῦ σώζεσθαι ἡμᾶς. He has no need\, like those high priests\, to offer sacrifices daily\, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once for all when he offered up himself.  Indeed\, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests\, but the word of the oath\, which came later than the law\, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever.  Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest\, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven\, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord.\nGospel Reading: John 10:1-9\nThe Lord said to the Jews who had come to him\, “Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way\, that man is a thief and a robber; but he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice\, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own\, he goes before them\, and the sheep follow him\, for they know his voice. This is the man who is teaching men everywhere against the people and the law and this place; moreover he also brought Greeks into the temple\, and he has defiled this holy place.” For they had previously seen Trophimos the Ephesian with him in the city\, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple. Then all the city was aroused\, and the people ran together; they seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple\, and at once the gates were shut. Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ κατὰ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ τοῦ νόμου καὶ τοῦ τόπου τούτου πάντας πανταχοῦN διδάσκων· ἔτι τε καὶ Ἕλληνας εἰσήγαγεν εἰς τὸ ἱερόν\, καὶ κεκοίνωκεν τὸν ἅγιον τόπον τοῦτον. Ἦσαν γὰρ ἑωρακότες Τρόφιμον τὸν Ἐφέσιον ἐν τῇ πόλει σὺν αὐτῷ\, ὃν ἐνόμιζον ὅτι εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν εἰσήγαγεν ὁ Παῦλος. 30 Ἐκινήθη τε ἡ πόλις ὅλη\, καὶ ἐγένετο συνδρομὴ τοῦ λαοῦ· καὶ ἐπιλαβόμενοι τοῦ Παύλου εἷλκον αὐτὸν ἔξω τοῦ ἱεροῦ· καὶ εὐθέως ἐκλείσθησαν αἱ θύραι. Ζητούντων δὲ αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι\, ἀνέβη φάσις τῷ χιλιάρχῳ τῆς σπείρης\, ὅτι ὅλη συγκέχυται Ἱερουσαλήμ· ὃς ἐξαυτῆς παραλαβὼν στρατιώτας καὶ ἑκατοντάρχους\, κατέδραμεν ἐπʼ αὐτούς· οἱ δέ\, ἰδόντες τὸν χιλίαρχον καὶ τοὺς στρατιώτας\, ἐπαύσαντο τύπτοντες τὸν Παῦλον.\nἈνάγνωσις Εὐαγγελίου: Κατὰ Ἰωάννην 16:2-13\nΕἶπεν ὁ Κὐριος τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ μαθηταῖς· ἔρχεται ὥρα ἵνα πᾶς ὁ ἀποκτείνας ὑμᾶς δόξῃ λατρείαν προσφέρειν τῷ Θεῷ. καὶ ταῦτα ποιήσουσιν\, ὅτι οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὸν πατέρα οὐδὲ ἐμέ. ἀλλὰ ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἡ ὥρα\, μνημονεύητε αὐτῶν ὅτι ἐγὼ εἶπον ὑμῖν. ταῦτα δὲ ὑμῖν ἐξ ἀρχῆς οὐκ εἶπον\, ὅτι μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν ἤμην. Νῦν δὲ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με\, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐρωτᾷ με ποῦ ὑπάγεις! ἀλλ᾽ ὅτι ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν\, ἡ λύπη πεπλήρωκεν ὑμῶν τὴν καρδίαν. ἀλλ᾽ ἐγὼ τὴν ἀλήθειαν λέγω ὑμῖν· συμφέρει ὑμῖν ἵνα ἐγὼ ἀπέλθω. ἐὰν γὰρ ἐγὼ μὴ ἀπέλθω\, ὁ παράκλητος οὐκ ἐλεύσεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς· ἐὰν δὲ πορευθῶ\, πέμψω αὐτὸν πρὸς ὑμᾶς· καὶ ἐλθὼν ἐκεῖνος ἐλέγξει τὸν κόσμον περὶ ἁμαρτίας καὶ περὶ δικαιοσύνης καὶ περὶ κρίσεως. περὶ ἁμαρτίας μέν\, ὅτι οὐ πιστεύουσιν εἰς ἐμέ· περὶ δικαιοσύνης δέ\, ὅτι πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου ὑπάγω καὶ οὐκέτι θεωρεῖτέ με· περὶ δὲ κρίσεως\, ὅτι ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου κέκριται. ῎Ετι πολλὰ ἔχω λέγειν ὑμῖν\, ἀλλ᾽ οὐ δύνασθε βαστάζειν ἄρτι. ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος\, τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας\, ὁδηγήσει ὑμᾶς εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν ἀλήθειαν·
