If even lifeless instruments\, such as the flute or the harp\, do not give distinct notes\, how will any one know what is played? And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound\, who will get ready for battle? So with yourselves; if you in a tongue utter speech that is not intelligible\, how will any one know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. There are doubtless many different languages in the world\, and none is without meaning; but if I do not know the meaning of the language\, I shall be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. So with yourselves; since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit\, strive to excell in building up the church. Therefore\, he who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. For if I pray in a tongue\, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. What am I to do? I will pray with spirit and I will sing with the mind also. Otherwise\, if you bless with the spirit\, how can any one in the position of an outsider say the “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? For you may give thanks well enough\, but the other man is not edified. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all; nevertheless\, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind\, in order to instruct others\, than ten thousand words in a tongue.\nGospel Reading: Mark 9:2-9\nAt that time\, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John\, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves; and he was transfigured before them\, and his garments became glistening\, intensely white\, as no fuller on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses; and they were talking to Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus\, “Master\, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths\, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say\, for they were exceedingly afraid. And a cloud overshadowed them\, and a voice came out of the cloud\, “This is my beloved son; listen to him.” And suddenly\, looking around they no longer saw any one with them but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain he charged them to tell no one what they had seen\, until the Son of man should have risen from the dead.

Let all things be done for edification. If any speak in a tongue\, let there be only two or at most three\, and each in turn; and let one interpret. But if there is no one to interpret\, let each one of them keep silence in church and speak to himself and to God. Let two or three prophets speak\, and let the others weigh what is said. If a revelation is made to another by sitting by\, let the first be silent. For you can all prophesy one by one\, so that all may learn and all be encouraged; and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. But God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints\, the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak\, but should be subordinate\, as even the law says. If there is anything they desire to know\, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. What! Did the word of God originate with you\, or are you the only one it has reached? If any one thinks that he is a prophet\, or spiritual\, he should acknowledge that what I am writing to you is a command of the Lord. If any one does not recognize this\, he is not recognized. And they prayed and said\, “Lord\, who knowest the hearts of all men\, show which one of these two thou hast chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside\, to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them\, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven apostles.\nGospel Reading: Matthew 15:32-39\nAt that time\, Jesus called his disciples to him and said\, “I have compassion on the crowd\, because they have been with me now three days\, and have nothing to eat; and I am unwilling to send them away hungry\, lest they faint on the way.” And the disciples said to him\, “Where are we to get bread enough in the desert to feed so great a crowd?” And Jesus said to them\, “How many loaves have you?” They said\, “Seven\, and a few small fish.” And commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground\, he took the seven loaves and the fish\, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples\, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied; and they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. Those who ate were four thousand men\, besides women and children. And sending away the crowds\, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.

Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again\, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me\, even so I send you.” And when He had said this\, He breathed on them and said to them\, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any\, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any\, they are retained.” Now Thomas\, one of the twelve\, called the Twin\, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him\, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them\, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails\, and place my finger in the mark of the nails\, and place my hand in His side\, I will not believe.” Eight days later\, His disciples were again in the house\, and Thomas was with them. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples\, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ\, the Son of God\, and that believing\, you may have life in His name.\nEpistle Reading: I Corinthians 3:9-17\nBrethren\, we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field\, God’s building. According to the grace of God given to me\, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation\, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid\, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold\, silver\, precious stones\, wood\, hay\, straw – each man’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it\, because it will be revealed with fire\, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. When evening came\, he was there alone\, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land\, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them\, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea\, they were terrified\, saying\, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them\, saying “Take heart\, it is I; have no fear.”\n And Peter answered him\, “Lord\, if it is you\, bid me come to you on the water.” He said\, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind\, he was afraid\, and beginning to sink he cried out\, “Lord\, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him\, saying to him\, “O man of little faith\, why did you doubt?” And when they entered the boat\, the wind ceased. Τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη σταδίους πολλοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀπεῖχεν\, βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων\, ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος. Τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν. Οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπατοῦντα ἐταράχθησαν λέγοντες ὅτι Φάντασμά ἐστιν\, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἔκραξαν. Εὐθὺς δὲ ἐλάλησεν  αὐτοῖς λέγων\, Θαρσεῖτε\, ἐγώ εἰμι· μὴ φοβεῖσθε. If the dead are not raised at all\, why are people baptized on their behalf? Why am I in peril every hour? I protest\, brethren\, by my pride in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord\, I die every day! What do I gain if\, humanly speaking\, I fought with beasts at Ephesos? If the dead are not raised\, “Let us eat and drink\, for tomorrow we die.” Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” Come to your right mind\, and sin no more. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame. But some one will ask\, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” You foolish man! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body which is to be\, but a bare kernel\, perhaps of wheat or some other grain.
