After spending some time there he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia and Phrygia\, strengthening all the disciples. Now a Jew named Apollos\, a native of Alexandria\, came to Ephesos. He was an eloquent man\, well versed in the scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit\, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus\, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him\, they took him and expounded to him the way of God more accurately. And when he wished to cross to Achaia\, the brethren encouraged him\, and wrote to the disciples to receive him. For Isaiah again said\, “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart\, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their heart\, and turn for me to heal them.” Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Nevertheless\, many even of the authorities believed in him\, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it\, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.\nAnd Jesus cried out and said\, “He who believes in me\, believes not in me but in him who sent me. For you bring some strange things to our ears; we wish to know therefore what these things mean.” Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. So Paul\, standing in the middle of the Areopagos\, said: “Men of Athens\, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along\, and observed the objects of your worship\, I found also an altar with this inscription\, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown\, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it\, being Lord of heaven and earth\, does not live in shrines made by man\, nor is he served by human hands\, as though he needed anything\, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything. And he made from one every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth\, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation\, that they should seek God\, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us\, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being.’\nGospel Reading: John 12:19-36\nAt that time\, the Pharisees took counsel against Jesus and said to one another\, “You see that you can do nothing; look\, the world has gone after him.”\nNow among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. And Paul went in\, as was his custom\, and for three weeks he argued with them from the scriptures\, explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead\, and saying\, “This Jesus\, whom I proclaim to you\, is the Christ.” And some of them were persuaded\, and joined Paul and Silas; as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. But the Jews were jealous\, and taking some wicked fellows of the rabble\, they gathered a crowd\, set the city in an uproar\, and attacked the house of Jason\, seeking to bring them out to the people. And when they could not find them\, they dragged Jason and some of the brethren before the city authorities\, crying\, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also\, and Jason has received them; and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar\, saying that there is another king\, Jesus.” And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard this. And when they had taken security from Jason and the rest\, they let them go.\nGospel Reading: John 11:47-54\nAt that time\, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council\, and said\, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. If we let him go on thus\, every one will believe in him\, and the Romans will come and destroy both our place and our nation.” But one of them\, Caiaphas\, who was high priest that year\, said to them\, “You know nothing at all; you do not understand that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people\, and that the whole nation should not perish.” He did not say this of his own accord\, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation\, and not for the nation only\, but to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. So from that day on they took counsel how to put him to death.\nJesus therefore no longer went about openly among the Jews\, but went from there to the country near the wilderness\, to a town called Ephraim; and there he stayed with the disciples.

Therefore his parents said\, “He is of age\, ask him.”\nSo for the second time they called the man who had been blind\, and said to him\, “Give God the praise; we know that this man is a sinner.” He answered\, “Whether he is a sinner\, I do not know; one thing I know\, that though I was blind\, now I see.” They said to him\, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them\, “I have told you already and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Now in the Church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers\, Barnabas\, Simeon who was called Niger\, Lucius of Cyrene\, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch\, and Saul. While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting\, the Holy Spirit said\, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So\, being sent out by the Holy Spirit\, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis\, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos\, they came upon a certain magician\, a Jewish false prophet\, named Bar-Jesus. He was with the proconsul\, Sergius Paulus\, a man of intelligence\, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the magician (for that is the meaning of his name) withstood them\, seeking to turn away the proconsul from the faith. But Saul\, who is also called Paul\, filled with the Holy Spirit\, looked intently at him and said\, “You son of the devil\, you enemy of all righteousness\, full of all deceit and villainy\, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? And now\, behold\, the hand of the Lord is upon you\, and you shall be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand. Κατασείσας δὲ αὐτοῖς τῇ χειρὶ σιγᾷν\, διηγήσατο αὐτοῖς πῶς ὁ κύριος αὐτὸν ἐξήγαγεν ἐκ τῆς φυλακῆς. Εἶπεν δέ\, Ἀπαγγείλατε Ἰακώβῳ καὶ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς ταῦτα. Ἐκεῖνος ἀνθρωποκτόνος ἦν ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ οὐχ ἕστηκεν\, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἀλήθεια ἐν αὐτῷ· ὅταν λαλῇ τὸ ψεῦδος\, ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων λαλεῖ\, ὅτι ψεύστης ἐστὶ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ. Ἐγὼ δὲ ὅτι τὴν ἀλήθειαν λέγω\, οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι. Τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐλέγχει με περὶ ἁμαρτίας; Εἰ δὲ ἀλήθειαν λέγω\, διατί ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι; Ὁ ὢν ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούει· διὰ τοῦτο ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἀκούετε\, ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἐστέ. Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ· Οὐ καλῶς λέγομεν ἡμεῖς ὅτι Σαμαρείτης εἶ σὺ καὶ δαιμόνιον ἔχεις; Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Ἐγὼ δαιμόνιον οὐκ ἔχω\, ἀλλὰ τιμῶ τὸν πατέρα μου\, καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀτιμάζετέ με. Ἐγὼ δὲ οὐ ζητῶ τὴν δόξαν μου· ἔστιν ὁ ζητῶν καὶ κρίνων. Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν\, ἐὰν τις τὸν λόγον τὸν ἐμὸν τηρήσῃ\, θάνατον οὐ μὴ θεωρήσῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
