Now in the Church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers\, Barnabas\, Simeon who was called Niger\, Lucius of Cyrene\, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch\, and Saul. While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting\, the Holy Spirit said\, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So\, being sent out by the Holy Spirit\, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis\, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos\, they came upon a certain magician\, a Jewish false prophet\, named Bar-Jesus. He was with the proconsul\, Sergius Paulus\, a man of intelligence\, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the magician (for that is the meaning of his name) withstood them\, seeking to turn away the proconsul from the faith. But Saul\, who is also called Paul\, filled with the Holy Spirit\, looked intently at him and said\, “You son of the devil\, you enemy of all righteousness\, full of all deceit and villainy\, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? And now\, behold\, the hand of the Lord is upon you\, and you shall be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand. Then the proconsul believed\, when he saw what had occurred\, for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.\nGospel Reading: John 8:51-59\nThe Lord said to the Jews who came to him\, “Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, if any one keeps my word\, he will never see death.” The Jews said to him\, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died\, as did the prophets; and you say\, ‘If any one keeps my word\, he will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham\, who died? And the prophets died! Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ γυνή· Κύριε\, δός μοι τοῦτο τὸ ὕδωρ\, ἵνα μὴ διψῶ μηδὲ ἔρχωμαι ἐνθάδε ἀντλεῖν. \nΛέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ὕπαγε φώνησον τὸν ἄνδρα σου καὶ ἐλθὲ ἐνθάδε. Ἀπεκρίθη ἡ γυνὴ καὶ εἶπεν· Οὐκ ἔχω ἄνδρα. Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Καλῶς εἶπας ὅτι ἄνδρα οὐκ ἔχω· πέντε γὰρ ἄνδρας ἔσχες\, καὶ νῦν ὃν ἔχεις οὐκ ἔστι σου ἀνήρ· τοῦτο ἀληθὲς εἴρηκας. Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή· Κύριε\, θεωρῶ ὅτι προφήτης εἶ σύ. Οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ προσεκύνησαν· καὶ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐν ῾Ιεροσολύμοις ἐστὶν ὁ τόπος ὅπου δεῖ προσκυνεῖν. Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Γύναι\, πίστευσόν μοι ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὔτε ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ οὔτε ἐν Ἰεροσολύμοις προσκυνήσετε τῷ πατρί. Ὑμεῖς προσκυνεῖτε ὃ οὐκ οἴδατε\, ἡμεῖς προσκυνοῦμεν ὃ οἴδαμεν· ὅτι ἡ σωτηρία ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐστίν. Ἀλλ᾽ ἔρχεται ὥρα\, καὶ νῦν ἐστιν\, ὅτε οἱ ἀληθινοὶ προσκυνηταὶ προσκυνήσουσι τῷ πατρὶ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ· καὶ γὰρ ὁ πατὴρ τοιούτους ζητεῖ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν. Πνεῦμα ὁ Θεός\, καὶ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτὸν ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν. Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή· Οἶδα ὅτι Μεσσίας ἔρχεται ὁ λεγόμενος Χριστός· ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος\, ἀναγγελεῖ ἡμῖν πάντα. λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ λαλῶν σοι. Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ\, καὶ ἐθαύμασαν ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει· οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἶπε\, τί ζητεῖς ἢ τί λαλεῖς μετ᾽ αὐτῆς; Ἀφῆκεν οὖν τὴν ὑδρίαν αὐτῆς ἡ γυνὴ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν\, καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἀνθρώποις· Δεῦτε ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον ὃς εἶπέ μοι πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησα· μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός; Ἐξῆλθον οὖν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτόν.\nἘν δὲ τῷ μεταξὺ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες· Ῥαββί\, φάγε. Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους· Μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν; Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἐμὸν βρῶμά ἐστιν ἵνα ποιῶ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με καὶ τελειώσω αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔργον. Οὐχ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἔτι τετράμηνός ἐστι καὶ ὁ θερισμὸς ἔρχεται; Ἰδοὺ λέγω ὑμῖν\, ἐπάρατε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ θεάσασθε τὰς χώρας\, ὅτι λευκαί εἰσι πρὸς θερισμὸν ἤδη. Καὶ ὁ θερίζων μισθὸν λαμβάνει καὶ συνάγει καρπὸν εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον\, ἵνα καὶ ὁ σπείρων ὁμοῦ χαίρῃ καὶ ὁ θερίζων. Ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ ὁ λόγος ἐστὶν ὁ ἀληθινός\, ὅτι ἄλλος ἐστὶν ὁ σπείρων καὶ ἄλλος ὁ θερίζων. Ἐγὼ ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς θερίζειν ὃ οὐχ ὑμεῖς κεκοπιάκατε· ἄλλοι κεκοπιάκασι\, καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν κόπον αὐτῶν εἰσεληλύθατε. ᾿Εκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν τῶν Σαμαρειτῶν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικός\, μαρτυρούσης ὅτι εἶπέ μοι πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησα. Ὡς οὖν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Σαμαρεῖται\, ἠρώτων αὐτὸν μεῖναι παρ᾽ αὐτοῖς· καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ δύο ἡμέρας. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” Jesus said to her\, “Woman\, believe me\, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know\, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming\, and now is\, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth\, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit\, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him\, “I know that the Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes\, he will show us all things.” Jesus said to her\, “I who speak to you am he.”\nJust then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman\, but none said\, “What do you wish?” or\, “Why are you talking with her?” So the woman left her water jar\, and went away into the city and said to the people\, “Come\, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” They went out of the city and were coming to him.\nMeanwhile the disciples besought him\, saying “Rabbi\, eat.” But he said to them\, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” So the disciples said to one another\, “Has anyone brought him food?” Jesus said to them\, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me\, and to accomplish his work. Do you not say\, ‘There are yet four months\, then comes the harvest’? I tell you\, lift up your eyes\, and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives wages\, and gathers fruit for eternal life\, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true\, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; others have labored\, and you have entered into their labor.”\nMany Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony. “He told me all that I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him\, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman\, “It is no longer because of your words that we believe\, for we have heard ourselves\, and we know that this is indeed Christ the Savior of the world.”

And when he had seized him\, he put him in prison\, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him\, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the Church.\nThe very night when Herod was about to bring him out\, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers\, bound with two chains\, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison; and behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared\, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side and woke him\, saying\, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. And the believers from among the circumcised who came with Peter were amazed\, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared\, “Can any one forbid water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. Now the apostles and the brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. You know the word which he sent to Israel\, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all)\, the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea\, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil\, for God was with him. And we are witnesses to all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and made him manifest; not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses\, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people\, and to testify that he is the one ordained by God to be judge of the living and the dead. Οὗτος ἤκουσεν τοῦ Παύλου λαλοῦντος· ὃς ἀτενίσας αὐτῷ\, καὶ ἰδὼν ὅτι πίστιν ἔχει τοῦ σωθῆναι\, εἶπεν μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ\, Ἀνάστηθι ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας σου ὀρθῶς. Καὶ ἥλλετο καὶ περιεπάτει. Οἱ δὲ ὄχλοι\, ἰδόντες ὃ ἐποίησεν ὁ Παῦλος\, ἐπῆραν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτῶν Λυκαονιστὶ λέγοντες\, Οἱ θεοὶ ὁμοιωθέντες ἀνθρώποις κατέβησαν πρὸς ἡμᾶς. Ἐκάλουν τε τὸν μὲν Βαρνάβαν\, Δία· τὸν δὲ Παῦλον\, Ἑρμῆν\, ἐπειδὴ αὐτὸς ἦν ὁ ἡγούμενος τοῦ λόγου. Ὁ δὲ ἱερεὺς τοῦ Διὸς τοῦ ὄντος πρὸ τῆς πόλεως αὐτῶν\, ταύρους καὶ στέμματα ἐπὶ τοὺς πυλῶνας ἐνέγκας\, σὺν τοῖς ὄχλοις ἤθελεν θύειν. Ἀκούσαντες δὲ οἱ ἀπόστολοι Βαρνάβας καὶ Παῦλος\, διαρρήξαντες τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν\, εἰσεπήδησαν εἰς τὸν ὄχλον\, κράζοντες καὶ λέγοντες\, Ἄνδρες\, τί ταῦτα ποιεῖτε; Καὶ ἡμεῖς ὁμοιοπαθεῖς ἐσμεν ὑμῖν ἄνθρωποι\, εὐαγγελιζόμενοι ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τούτων τῶν ματαίων ἐπιστρέφειν ἐπὶ τὸν θεὸν τὸν ζῶντα\, ὃς ἐποίησεν τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτοῖς· ὃς ἐν ταῖς παρῳχημέναις γενεαῖς εἴασεν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη πορεύεσθαι ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν. Καίτοιγε οὐκ ἀμάρτυρον ἑαυτὸν ἀφῆκεν ἀγαθοποιῶν\, οὐρανόθεν ὐμῖν ὑετοὺς διδοὺς καὶ καιροὺς καρποφόρους\, ἐμπιπλῶν τροφῆς καὶ εὐφροσύνης τὰς καρδίας ἡμῶν. Καὶ ταῦτα λέγοντες\, μόλις κατέπαυσαν τοὺς ὄχλους τοῦ μὴ θύειν αὐτοῖς.\nἈνάγνωσις Εὐαγγελίου: Κατὰ Ἰωάννην 7:14-30\nΤῆς ἑορτῆς μεσούσης\, ἀνέβη ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ ἐδίδασκε. καὶ ἐθαύμαζον οἱ ᾿Ιουδαῖοι λέγοντες· πῶς οὗτος γράμματα οἶδε μὴ μεμαθηκώς; ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν· ἡ ἐμὴ διδαχὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμή\, ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαντός με· ἐάν τις θέλῃ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιεῖν\, γνώσεται περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς\, πότερον ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν ἢ ἐγὼ ἀπ᾽ ἐμαυτοῦ λαλῶ. ὁ ἀφ᾽ ἑαυτοῦ λαλῶν τὴν δόξαν τὴν ἰδίαν ζητεῖ\, ὁ δὲ ζητῶν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ πέμψαντος αὐτόν\, οὗτος ἀληθής ἐστι\, καὶ ἀδικία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν. οὐ Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὸν νόμον; καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ποιεῖ τὸν νόμον. τί με ζητεῖτε ἀποκτεῖναι; ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ὄχλος καὶ εἶπε· δαιμόνιον ἔχεις· τίς σε ζητεῖ ἀποκτεῖναι; ἀπεκρίθη ᾿Ιησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· ἓν ἔργον ἐποίησα\, καὶ πάντες θαυμάζετε διὰ τοῦτο. Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὴν περιτομήν\, οὐχ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐστίν\, ἀλλ᾽ ἐκ τῶν πατέρων\, καὶ ἐν σαββάτῳ περιτέμνετε ἄνθρωπον. εἰ περιτομὴν λαμβάνει ἄνθρωπος ἐν σαββάτῳ ἵνα μὴ λυθῇ ὁ νόμος Μωϋσέως\, ἐμοὶ χολᾶτε ὅτι ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐποίησα ἐν σαββάτῳ! μὴ κρίνετε κατ᾽ ὄψιν\, ἀλλὰ τὴν δικαίαν κρίσιν κρίνατε.\n῎Ελεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν ῾Ιεροσολυμιτῶν· οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι; καὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ\, καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσι. μήποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ Χριστός; ἀλλὰ τοῦτον οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν· ὁ δὲ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔρχηται\, οὐδεὶς γινώσκει πόθεν ἐστίν. ἔκραξεν οὖν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς καὶ λέγων· κἀμὲ οἴδατε\, καὶ οἴδατε πόθεν εἰμί· καὶ ἀπ᾽ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλήλυθα\, ἀλλ᾽ ἔστιν ἀληθινὸς ὁ πέμψας με\, ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε· ἐγὼ οἶδα αὐτόν\, ὅτι παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ εἰμι κἀκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν.
